“Oh wonderful Orosei, with your almonds and your reedy river, throbbing throbbing with light and the sea’s nearness, and all so lost, in a world gone by, lingering as legends linger on. It is hard to believe it is real.”
- D. H. Lawrence, The Sea and Sardinia (1921)

Orosei - A Beautiful Ancient City

Orosei is the hometown of Efisio Farris, the owner of Gourmet Sardinia and author of “Sweet Myrtle and Bitter Honey”. It is a small coastal town on the eastern coast of Sardinia, framed by meadows, rolling hills, and mountains. The nearby beaches are breathtakingly beautiful vistas of white sand and clear blue water, dotted with magnificent rocky areas. The beaches in this region are perfect for hunting for shellfish, snorkeling, and surfing. The oldest part of the town center, dating back to medieval times, has fascinating basalt and stone homes that date back to the fifteenth century.

A Book filled with the Heritage of Orosei

In his book, “Sweet Myrtle and Bitter Honey”, Efisio offers a glimpse into life in Orosei. His family has lived in this region for centuries, and the book is filled with stories of his friends and relatives. There are snippets of regional history and descriptions of traditional festivals in every chapter. The beautiful photographs highlight the gorgeous Sardinian landscape, delicious traditional food, and the friendly Sardinian people. Of course, this book is also filled with recipes from the region, many of which are from Efisio’s own family.

We hope that you will share recipes from this website, and from “Sweet Myrtle and Bitter Honey” , with your family and friends. Perhaps some of this delicious Sardinian fare will become a tradition in your family, too.

The collection of honey is an ancient activity, nearly as old as human civilization itself. The earliest evidence of humans collecting honey is shown in a cave painting in Valencia, Spain that dates back approximately 8,000 years. Throughout human history, it has been used as both a sweetener and medicine. Using honey to treat wounds and burns, because of its antimicrobial properties, was first documented in 1892.

Sardinia is the second largest island in the Mediterranean; just a bit smaller than Sicily. Sardinia is also the fourth least populated region in Italy, with under two million inhabitants. The culinary history of Sardinia can be traced back thousands of years. One of the oldest Sardinian foods is probably pane carasau, or “music bread”. In fact, remains of a crispy flatbread like pane carasau have been found in archeological excavations of ancient Sardinian stone buildings.

Olive trees are found everywhere on the island of Sardinia, and these trees produce some of the finest olive oils in the world. Even though machines have replaced the traditional methods of extracting the oil, the results have not suffered. Olive oil remains a delicious and healthy staple of the Sardinian diet.

Seafood In The Sardinian Diet

With 1,149 miles of coastline, it may come as a surprise that meats, cheeses, and pasta, not fish, are the oldest staples of a Sardinian diet. However, you will now find many seafood dishes are popular and even considered “traditional” in Sardinia. Aside from a few, many of these dishes date back no more than a few centuries. That’s relatively young, by Sardinian standards.
