The collection of honey is an ancient activity, nearly as old as human civilization itself. The earliest evidence of humans collecting honey is shown in a cave painting in Valencia, Spain that dates back approximately 8,000 years. Throughout human history, it has been used as both a sweetener and medicine. Using honey to treat wounds and burns, because of its antimicrobial properties, was first documented in 1892.


Of course, local honey has been a food staple of Sardinia for as long as there have been people on the island. In 2012, Sardinia was confirmed to have the world’s highest percentage of people who lived to be 100 years old. While there are many factors that contribute to their longevity, the benefits of a healthy, low fat diet - including local honey - can not be denied.

Honey from any region of the world will have its own distinctive flavor, according to the soil and plant life in that area. Miele Amaro (Sardinian Bitter Honey) is a distinctly Sardinian delicacy. The flavor is naturally sweet at first, with a slightly bitter finish. Tasting a bit of this honey is like tasting some of the Sardinian flora, growing wild in the Mediterranean sunshine near sparkling coastal waters.

Sardinian honey pairs beautifully with a variety of fruits and cheeses, as well as with pane carasau (Sardinia flat bread).

Sardinian honey is not only uniquely delicious, but any honey is nutritious! Honey contains varying concentrations of polyphenols, which are powerful antioxidants that are thought to reduct the risk of heart disease and some forms of cancer. Antioxidants also contribute to healthy looking skin and shiny hair. Polyphenols are also found in fresh produce, tea, and olive oil (another staple of the Sardinian diet!). One tablespoon of honey contains approximately 64 calories, and has no fat or cholesterol. It’s a great choice use as a sweetener, instead of processed sugar.
